Reopening Your Business? Here’s The Latest Guidance & Guidelines to Do It Safely And Properly

COVID-19 Sanitizing Tips, Flu & Cold Sanitizing TipsAugust 12, 2020iSanitize

Running a business during ‘normal’ times can be challenging, but business during a pandemic presents even more hurdles. There are a lot of things you need to consider in order to provide an environment that is safe for your customers and employees.

Reducing the risk of exposure to COVID-19 by social distancing, cleaning and disinfecting is an important part of reopening public spaces, workplaces, businesses and schools. Providing a safe and clean environment requires careful planning and execution.

How do you continue business during COVID-19?

The first step to providing a safe environment is developing a plan. Every business, school and public space is different, so your COVID-19 plan is going to vary from the next business.

A good starting point is to review the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for deep cleaning and sanitizing public spaces, workplaces, businesses and schools. Your specific plan should consider common spaces, type of business and the workplace. If you’re a property management company, you will likely need to develop several plans that are site specific.

What should your plan include?

Review your space and determine how you can minimize areas of exposure. Exposure increases the more people you have in a space, so you need to account for areas such as waiting rooms, public spaces and restrooms.

Decide if there is a way to remove materials or change workflow to decrease people gathering. For offices this could be staggering appointments, removing the sign in sheet, extending hours or having customers text you on arrival to limit time in the waiting rooms. An office will also need to consider lunch rooms, meeting spaces and other gathering areas.

Take an inventory of frequently touched surfaces such as tables, computers, desks, phones, restrooms and doors. Your plan should address deep cleaning and sanitizing spaces, both frequency and requirements.

How do you know frequency and how to thoroughly clean your space?

The CDC has provided cleaning standards for public spaces, workplaces, businesses and schools. Cleaning procedures vary for hard surfaces(keyboards, restrooms, tables) and soft surfaces(carpet, chairs).

Consider hiring a deep cleaning and sanitizing company that is familiar with the COVID-19 cleaning recommendations, as well as using proper EPA approved disinfectants. It is important to partner with professionals that have the training and equipment needed to sanitize various surfaces. Recommendations are constantly changing based on updated research so having a group focus solely on cleaning will permit time for you to address other areas of need.

How do you implement your COVID-19 plan?

Ongoing communication to both your employees and customers is important during COVID-19. Once you have your plan developed it is important to tell people how you will open the public space, business or school. Regular updates ensure customers and employees that you are providing a safe environment and addressing COVID-19.

Tell customers your plan via social media, email or phone calls. Create signage for your business that reinforces social distancing, face masks and any changes in procedures. You should also communicate ongoing cleaning protocols that you have implemented.
